If you haven’t heard of Bourtange yet, you’re seriously missing out. This incredible village in the northeast of the Netherlands is famous for its unique star-shaped fortress layout — and seeing it in person feels like stepping back in time.

I had the chance to visit Bourtange this year during the Voorjaarsfestival, and wow — the combination of history, vibrant festival energy, and that one-of-a-kind design made it an unforgettable experience. Imagine strolling through cobblestone streets surrounded by 17th-century walls, all while enjoying live music, local food, and festive vibes.

The fortress town is super photogenic, with quaint shops and charming cafés tucked into the old buildings. Plus, the festival brought an extra layer of life to the village with cultural performances and happy crowds soaking in the spring sunshine.

If you’re planning a trip to the Netherlands and want to explore beyond the usual spots, Bourtange is a must-see. And if you can time it with the Voorjaarsfestival — even better! It’s a perfect way to combine history, culture, and celebration all in one.
