There are some places in the world that don’t feel real until you see them with your own eyes. For me, Mont Saint-Michel was one of those.

Driving through the French countryside, you’re surrounded by endless fields, and then, suddenly, there it is: a medieval abbey rising straight out of the water like something from a fantasy film. It looks like a floating castle, caught between the sea and the sky.

First Impressions

When I first saw it, I actually slowed down just to take it in. From a distance, Mont Saint-Michel looks almost unreal, as if it’s been painted into the horizon. But as you get closer, you start to see the details: the stone walls, the winding streets, and the abbey towering above it all. Walking across the bridge, the air smelled of sea salt and there was a faint breeze. With every step, the sound of gulls and the sight of the tide rolling in reminded me, this place is alive with nature as much as with history.

Things to do in Mont Saint Michel

Here are some of the main things to do in Mont Saint Michel:

1. Explore the Abbey

The abbey is the heart of Mont Saint-Michel and the reason it became famous. Climbing up through the winding streets until you reach the top feels like a pilgrimage in itself. Inside, you’ll discover vast stone halls, Gothic cloisters open to the sky, and breathtaking views of the bay. It’s impossible not to feel the weight of history here, pilgrims have been coming since the 8th century.

2. Try the Famous Omelette at La Mère Poulard

One of Mont Saint-Michel’s quirkiest traditions is the fluffy, soufflé-like omelette at La Mère Poulard, a restaurant that’s been serving them since the 19th century. Cooked over an open fire in copper pans, it’s less about the taste (some say it’s overpriced!) and more about the show. Watching the chefs whip the eggs with wooden sticks before sliding them into the flames feels like stepping into culinary theatre.

3. Walk the Cobbled Streets & Ramparts

Getting lost in Mont Saint-Michel’s medieval streets is part of the charm. There are tiny shops, old stone houses, and winding staircases leading to viewpoints over the bay. Walking along the ramparts, you’ll get sweeping views that change constantly with the tide. Early morning or late evening is best if you want to feel the atmosphere without the crowds.

4. Join a Night Event (Nocturnes & Rêves de la Lune)

If you visit Mont Saint-Michel in summer, don’t rush back after sunset. The abbey hosts its famous Nocturnes, evening openings from mid-July to the end of August, where you can explore the abbey after dark. The halls feel completely different at night: quieter, more mysterious, and lit in ways that highlight the stone arches and shadowy corners.

5. Walk Across the Bay

You can walk barefoot across the sandbanks at low tide. The landscape is vast and ever-changing, shifting between mudflats, quicksand patches, and glistening water. It’s both humbling and exhilarating, a reminder that Mont Saint-Michel is as much about nature as it is about history.

6. Take a Microlight Flight Over the Bay

One experience I sadly missed, but is high on my list for next time, is taking a microlight flight over the bay. Imagine soaring above the coastline in a lightweight aircraft, with the tides stretching endlessly below you and Mont Saint-Michel rising like a crown from the sea. From up there, you don’t just see the abbey you see its entire stage: the sandbanks, the shifting waters, and the vast horizon that makes this place feel almost otherworldly

Practical Tips for Your Visit

  • Best time to visit: Early morning or late evening, when the crowds are thinner and the light is magical.

  • Getting there: The nearest big city is Rennes. From there, you can take a train + bus connection, or drive (parking is on the mainland, with shuttle buses to the island).

  • Stay overnight: If you can, spend a night nearby, Mont Saint-Michel lit up at night is a whole new experience.

Final Thoughts

Mont Saint-Michel isn’t just a destination. It’s a feeling, of stepping into history, of being surrounded by nature’s power, of seeing a place that has inspired people for over a thousand years.

If you ever get the chance to go, don’t just check it off your list. Take your time. Walk slowly. Look up. Let it sink in. Because Mont Saint-Michel is more than just a place to visit, it’s a place to remember.
